For his third solo exhibition at the Suzy Shammah Gallery, Walter Niedermayr will show a series of works on alpine landscapes, never displayed before, which also includes works from the Aspen Series realized in Aspen, Colorado.

The exhibition investigates the relationship between landscape and architecture, a theme that has been at the core of Niedermayr's work since the mid 80s. Using photographs, video and a wallpaper installation, the artist reflects upon how human activity progressively shapes - and consumes - its environment, structuring landscapes with architectures through which nature is experienced.

As Walter Niedermayr states: "From a spatial point of view, everything is perpetually changing; including people and fashions. Nothing changes as quickly as the world of tourism, with leisure and sport activities evolving. These forms of movement create new structures within the landscape and change the circumstances of the present. (...) Man's concept of real-world landscapes is perceived through media-based images. Man's approach towards the real world has taken place largely by means of the image. Perception of landscape is primarily the perception of images."

According to Niedermayr, the composite pattern of the wallpaper alternates between the appearance of reality and the manipulated reality of the image, with an aim to heighten our awareness by revealing the conventions of representation.

With projects such as Alpine Landschaften (Alpine Landscapes), Raumfolgen (Space Con / Sequences), Rohbauten (Shell Constructions) and Artefakte (Artifacts), Walter Niedermayr has investigated a notion of space as a reality shaped and occupied by man, questioning the ephemeral realms between representation and imagination. Since 2001, with the series Bildraum (Image-Space) which marks the artist collaboration with the Japanese architect firm Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa / SANAA, Niedermayr has focused on architecture in a way that uncovers space and ambience. From 2005 the artist has been working on a new series, resulting from his extensive travels in Iran, a selection of which has been presented in 2010 at the Venice Biennale. From 2009 Walter Niedermayr has also been working on the Aspen Series project in Colorado. His recent monographs are Recollection, Hatje Cantz 2010, Appearances, Skira 2011 and Mose, Linea di confine / Koenig Books 2011.
