Galleria Suzy Shammah presents Hold, the second solo show in Italy by the Austrian artist Florian Schmidt. The exhibition’s title defines a series of large-scale works realized with layers of cotton and cardboard and held together by thin wooden frames.

In all the works series presented in this exhibition, which in addition to Hold include Share, Beside, Immunity and Ribbon, the artist gets to a painterly result through a process of layering, by adding and subtracting elements proper to a vocabulary of abstract painting. Following precise composition rules, Schmidt uses fragments of former artworks as primary material for his new paintings.

In the series Share for example, rest pieces of previous works from 2009 - year of Schmidt’s first solo show in Milan - up until today are assembled together to form separate compositions which progress outlining a colourful diagonal line. The issues under artistic examination embodied in each painting series are interconnected and continuously re-examined at different points in time through diverse modes. 

Florian Schmidt (Raabs an der Thaya, 1980) lives in Berlin. He has shown extensively throughout Europe and USA including solo shows in London, Los Angeles, Milan, New York, Paris and San Francisco.
