Daniel Silver
24 Jan. - 10 Mar. 2012 Installation view - Gallery Galleria Suzy Shammah is pleased to present Daniel Silver's third solo show. The London-based artist (b. 1972) will exhibit large-scale wood sculptures, marble busts and bronze statues animating the gallery environment with ambiguous and totem-like figures. Silver revises pre-existing images with formal precision, injecting conventional materials with a sensual physicality to obtain something wholly new. The artist subjects the original material, like the trunk of a tree or a copy in marble or clay of a model sculpture, to an intense and laborious process of transformation, attaining a state of "un-knowing" that is essential to his current research. The plinths on which these works rest are fully integrated into the sculptural body, to the extent that it is possible to define them as intrinsically equivalent to the figures themselves. The artist engages with the history of figurative sculpture and his position within this tradition, challenging its conventions.
